Parts of Pennsylvania are reporting the most snow in 3 years
From CNN Meteorologist Mary GilbertSnowfall totals skyrocketed across eastern Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, around 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, where widespread amounts of 6 to 10 inches fell Tuesday.
Tuesday’s total snowfall climbed to 9.1 inches at the area’s official reporting station, Lehigh Valley International Airport.
It’s the first time 6 inches or more of snow has fallen across the region in a single day since February 1, 2021. The 2021 storm was prolific for the area, bringing more than 20 inches of snow in a single day.
Tuesday’s storm brought even higher totals to other portions of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley:
- Bangor: 12.0 inches
- Bethlehem: 10.5 inches
- Nazareth: 10.3 inches
- Allentown: 9.5 inches
- Whitehall Township: 9.3 inches
New York City has its snowiest day in more than 2 years

It’s officially the snowiest single day for New York City since January 29, 2022, even with only a few inches of snow, as snow has been hard to come by in recent winters.
A total of 3.2 inches of snow fell in New York City’s Central Park Tuesday. This ends the record drought of744 consecutive days since 2 inches or more of snow has blanketed the city in a single day.

Snow has ended in the city after tapering off quickly in the early afternoon. It will continue in nearby Long Island.
Snow amounts climbed higher in the surrounding metro and in nearby New Jersey:
- Glen Cove, New York: 8.1 inches
- Coney Island, New York: 6.9 inches
- Newark, New Jersey: 4.9 inches
- John F. Kennedy Airport: 4.2 inches
- LaGuardia Airport: 3.3 inches
Nearly 130,000 without power in Pennsylvania as heavy, wet snow piles up

Nearly 130,000 customers in central and eastern Pennsylvania are without power, according toPowerOutage.us, as the state grapples with heavy, wet snow.
Another 12,000-plus customers in western New Jersey were without power, according to Poweroutage.us.
The areas of the outages line up perfectly with where the heaviest snow has fallen during the storm. More than a foot of snow has been reported in both states. That combined with gusty winds was enough to down tree branches and cause power issues.
More than 250 car accidents reported in New Jersey during the storm, governor says
From CNN's Nicki BrownMore than 250 car accidents have already been reported to New Jersey state police during Tuesday’s winter storm, according to the state’s governor.
More than a foot of snow has been reported in the northwestern part of the state.
“Please folks, stay home – and if you have to be on the roads, please, please, please be really careful,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said on a Tuesday radio appearance on 1010 WINS.
How the state is dealing with the snow: About 2,500 pieces of equipment from the transportation department are out on the roads, in addition to equipment from local governments, according to Murphy. A commercial vehicle banis also currently in place, in coordination with other neighboring states.
The state’s public transportation system is holding up so far, according to the governor.

Clouds from the storm stretch from the Carolinas through New England, but the sun is starting to shine in parts of Pennsylvania and New York as the storm advances east.
Where clouds have dissipated, fallen snow is showing up in the storm’s wake across parts of eastern West Virginia, western Maryland and central Pennsylvania.
Snow recently came to an end across Pennsylvania but will still pile up into the early afternoon in New Jersey and through the afternoon in New England.

New York is holding a special election today to find a successor for the disgraced former Republican Rep. George Santos, and the nor’easter isn’t stopping Democratic congressional candidate Tom Suozzi from Election Day campaigning.
Suozzi stopped in Uniondale Tuesday, greeting UPS workers during their shift change and asking them to vote for him before polls close tonight.
He promoted the rides his campaign is offering to the polls today, saying that he has about 30 people out as drivers.
“The weather’s falling on the Democrats and Republicans. Nice and bipartisan – just the way I like things,” Suozzi said when asked if he’s worried about the snow.

Heavy snow is spreading into southern New England now

This radar snapshot shows snow falling across a large portion of the Northeast, while mainly rain falls just off the coast.
As snow continues to bury parts of southern New York, heavy snow has expanded farther north and east into southern New England.
Heavy snow falling at rates in excess of 2 inches per hour is possible into the early afternoon from the easternmost portion of New York’s Long Island and eastern Connecticut through the Massachusetts Cape, the Storm Prediction Center warned.

More than 112,000 customers without power in Pennsylvania

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center warned “the axis of heaviest snowfall is expected from eastern Pennsylvania, including the Lehigh Valley, through northern New Jersey, far southeast New York, and southern New England.”
From snow to sunshine in a matter of hours: This will be a quick-hitting Nor'easter

This future weather radar shows snow mainly over southern New England by the early afternoon.
A nor’easter is delivering a quick thump of snow to the Northeast. But snow will only fall for a total of 12 hours or less for many cities before dry conditions return along with some peeks of sunshine.
The first flakes began to fall in New York City right around 3 a.m. ET Tuesday, but much of the snow will be out of the city before 3 p.m. ET. Snow will fall for an even shorter period in Boston — likely closer to just eight hours in total from Tuesday morning through the afternoon.
But remember: The short duration doesn’t mean minimal snow because of robust snowfall rates in the range of 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour that will continue from southern New York state through southern New England into the afternoon.
Similar snowfall rates early Tuesday morning led to 8 to 10 inches of snow in northeastern Pennsylvania in just about six hours.
Some sunshine will break out across snow-covered portions of the Northeast by Tuesday afternoon as the storm races out over the Atlantic Ocean.

The last time a storm unloaded 6 inches or more of snow in a single day was January 29, 2022, for a few cities.
Here’s what they received then and what’s forecast now.
- New York City: 5 to8 inches (7.3 inches in 2022)
- Bridgeport, Connecticut: 6 to 8 inches (9.6 inches in 2022)
- Providence, Rhode Island: 6 to 8 inches (18.8 inches in 2022)
Boston could receive 4 to 6 inches of snow.
It’s been nearly two years since Boston had a snowfall of 6 inches or more in a day. The last big single-day snowfall for the city was 8.5 inches on February 25, 2022.
A very warm winter and lack of significant snow have caused significant snowfall deficits — the difference in snowfall received compared to normal — to skyrocket across the region.

A nor’easter is unloading snow across portions of the Northeast, but some particularly heavy, disruptive snow is headed for New York City.
Heavy snow falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches or more an hour could start as soon as 8 a.m. ET in the New York City area, the Storm Prediction Center warned.
This quick-moving storm will end for the most part late Tuesday afternoon or evening, but not before unleashing heavy, wet snow and strong winds that will cause a hazardous morning commute and power outages.
Here’s a breakdown of the forecast for New York City:

Despite the winter weather, poll sites in New York's Queens and Bronx will be open Tuesday
From CNN’s Celina TeborNew York City Mayor Eric Adams said city officials are “taking the storm extremely serious” ahead of expected winter weather across the city Monday night and into Tuesday, adding that poll sites will be open Tuesday across Queens and the Bronx for the election.
Forty-six polling locations across Queens and the Bronx will be open Tuesday, according to NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol.
The winter weather will bring low visibility, high wind gusts, slippery roads and possibly up to two feet of coastal flooding, the mayor said.
More than 1,000 US flights canceled Tuesday

Most of those cancellations come from airports located in northeastern states.
As of Tuesday morning, 387 flights from LaGuardia, 221 flights from Boston Logan International and 180 flights from Newark are among those canceled.
Winter storm warning issued for New York City for the first time since 2022

Weather Prediction Center warns of heavy snow, strong winds and coastal flooding

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) warned early on Tuesday that the “strong nor’easter” that will impact the Northeast could bring heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding.
“The axis of heaviest snowfall is expected from eastern Pennsylvania, including the Lehigh Valley, through northern New Jersey, far southeast New York, and southern New England,” the WPC said.
This region of heaviest snowfall includes the New York Metro Area, which is currently forecast to receive 5 to 8 inches of snow, according to the New York City National Weather Service office.
Some areas are expected to receive up to 6 to 12 inches of snow, especially in southern New England, according to the WPC.
Strong winds are forecast on the western side of the winter storm, with gusts up to 40 mph for much of the Northeast.
As the storm moves over the Atlantic later in the day on Tuesday, strong winds could work in tandem with the wet, heavy snow to cause damage to trees and power lines and cause power outages, warns the WPC.
Coastal flooding is also a concern at high tide on Tuesday, especially for the northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts, according to the WPC.
New York City and Northeast metros brace for disruptive heavy snow

Governors in several states, including New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, are urging people to work from home and avoid non-essential travel amid concerns that blowing snow and heavy winds will create treacherous road conditions.
“Mother Nature is sending her love our way for Valentine’s Day in the form of a massive snowstorm,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday.
Ahead of the storm, New York City’s transit authority began preparing rail lines, bridges and subway systems, including outfitting buses with snow chains and positioning de-icing and debris-removal trains for outdoor tracks.
New York City Public Schools will transition to remote learning on Tuesday. Elsewhere, classes have been canceled in several city districts, including those in Boston, Newark, New Jersey, and New Haven, Connecticut.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy warned people to “take this one seriously” as parts of the state are eyeing up to a foot of dense, wet snow.
The state’s transportation commissioner, Fran O’Conner, urged residents to stay home and exercise “extreme caution” if they must venture outside.
There is a special election happening in New York today as nor'easter blasts the region

What had been a safely blue suburban Long Island seat for most of the past three decades is, once again, shaping up to be a political battleground.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said city officials are “taking the storm extremely serious” ahead of expected winter weather across the city Monday night and into Tuesday, adding that poll sites will be open Tuesday across Queens and the Bronx for the election.
About the election: The expensive and fiercely contested matchup is between61-year-old Democrat Tom Suozzi, a former House member and a staple of Nassau County politics since first being elected mayor of Glen Cove in 1993, against little-known Mazi Pilip, a 44-year-old Ethiopian-born, Israeli American county legislator.
Suozzi’s brand is still strong; he ran the county during some of its best economic times, before his first election to Congress in 2016. But Pilip, though her ideological bearings remain fuzzy and she has been at times hard to find on the campaign trail, has the prevailing political winds at her back – and the opportunity to both put a stamp on the GOP’s restored primacy on Long Island and emerge as an up-and-coming national figure ahead of the fall’s general election.

Boston mayor announces snow emergency and cancels Tuesday's public school classes

A potential nor’easter set to impact areas of Massachusetts on Tuesday has prompted Boston Mayor Michelle Wu to declare a snow emergency, which is set to go into effect at 10 p.m. Monday.
Wu also canceled Boston Public Schools classes on Tuesday as the major winter storm, could bring 7 to 13inches of snow, the National Weather Service said in analert.
Wu added that snow could come down heavily during the morning commute, starting early in the morning and continuing through the afternoon.
“Please stay off the roads tomorrow, wherever possible,” Wu said during a press conference. “Make plans to be indoors, stay off the roads. It’s looking like it will come down pretty heavily and fast.”
New York City schools move to remote learning Tuesday due to winter storm forecast

This comes as weather forecast shows winter weather overnight could bring over six inches of snow to the city. Wind gusts up to 40 mph could also hit the city, according toNYC’s emergency notification system.
“We’re expecting winter weather overnight tonight which could lead to5-8inches of snow with locally higher amounts by the morning. As a result, all @NYCSchools will move to remote learning tomorrow,” the mayor said in a post.
