With a second day of highs in the 80s locally, a front sinking into the area is sparking strong to severe storms in and around Loudoun County and across northern parts of the area this afternoon. These storms continue to drift south with the front into evening. The highest risk of severe weather is in the immediate area and southward.

Through Tonight: Showers and storms in the northwest suburbs continue to shift south and east. The most widespread storminess is probably south of Interstate 66 and Route 50 as storms mature this afternoon. Even in that part of the area, they can be scattered. The main threats from storms are the potential for damaging wind, some hail, heavy rain and dangerous lightning. While most showers and storms are moving away by sunset or so, an isolated storm can persist until later evening. Lows range across the 50s.

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Partial sunshine is a good bet through the day. A random shower or two could form late, but most spots stay dry. While it is cooler, it’s still mild, with highs in the low or mid-70s. Winds are light and variable.
